Reddit Uses AI to Block 23 Million Spam Views and Detect Around 25,000 Spam Posts and Comment a Day

Reddit Fights Spam

Reddit is using AI more aggressively than ever to fight spam, fake engagement, and harmful content. According to the company, its latest AI moderation systems now block approximately 23 million spam views every day, detect around 25,000 spam posts and comments daily, and remove nearly 2 million fake votes every 24 hours.

The announcement is another example of how AI is being used behind the scenes to improve the quality of online content. For Reddit, that’s especially important because its discussions have become one of the web’s most valuable sources of information for both SEO and AI-powered search tools.

AI Is Helping Reddit Stop Spam Before Users See It

Reddit says its new moderation systems use large language models (LLMs) to identify intended spam campaigns and fake activity that older detection methods often missed.

Between January and March 2026, Reddit reported:

  • 23 million spam views blocked every day
  • Approximately 25,000 spam posts and comments detected daily
  • Nearly 2 million fake votes removed every day
  • A 20% reduction in spam exposure compared to the previous quarter
  • Harmful content removed in under five seconds
  • More than a 40% reduction in exposure to hateful or violent content

The platform is also checking for suspicious behavior when new accounts are created. If an account appears to be automated, Reddit may require additional verification before allowing it to participate in discussions.

Why This Matters Beyond Moderation

This isn’t just about keeping Reddit communities clean. Reddit has become a major source of information for AI companies. Licensing agreements with companies like Google and OpenAI reportedly generate between $50 million and $70 million annually, making Reddit’s content one of its most valuable assets.

As more AI tools cite Reddit discussions in their responses, protecting the quality of that content becomes increasingly important.

One growing concern is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), where AI-generated Reddit posts are created specifically to influence AI chatbot answers. These posts are aimed to manipulate what AI models read and ultimately present to users.

By detecting this type of content early, Reddit helps preserve the authenticity of its platform while protecting the value of its data.

Reddit Is Taking a Different Approach

Rather than waiting for users or moderators to report spam, Reddit’s AI looks for suspicious behavior from the moment an account is created.

The system analyzes patterns that suggest intentional fake activity or engagement, or automated posting. If something looks suspicious, Reddit can stop or reduce the content from  gaining visibility.

It’s a proactive approach that shows how spam has evolved since modern spam isn’t always obvious. AI can generate realistic posts, comments, and conversations at scale, making traditional detection methods far less effective.

Reddit Has Been Fighting Spam for Years

Spam has always been part of running a large online community.

For more than 20 years, Reddit has relied on automated filters, machine learning, and volunteer moderators to remove unwanted content. In 2024, the company even published an overview of its anti-spam systems to give users and moderators more transparency into how its detection tools work.

What This Means for SEO and AI Search

One takeaway from Reddit’s announcement is that platforms are investing heavily in protecting the quality of the content that AI models consume.

As AI search becomes more common, trusted sources of real human discussions become more valuable. That also means platforms have a stronger incentive to detect fake engagement, intentional fake campaigns, and low-quality AI-generated content before it spreads.

For SEO professionals and marketers, the goal hasn’t changed. Creating helpful, original content remains the best long-term strategy. Trying to manipulate AI search with fake discussions or artificial engagement is becoming much harder as platforms continue improving their detection systems.

Despite all the discussion on AI, trust is becoming one of the most important ranking signals, whether the audience is a person using Google Search or an AI assistant generating an answer.
